The sèvis.
Drums call the rhythm of the lwa being served, vèvè drawn in cornmeal, songs in order — until the lwa arrives in person.
A sèvis is held at a peristyle around the center post (poto mitan), the axis down which the lwa descend. The order is fixed: Legba first to open the gate, then the families of lwa in sequence, each with its own drum rhythm, songs, colors, and vèvè — the intricate ground drawing made in cornmeal that calls the spirit. Food is prepared to each lwa's preference. The drumming is not accompaniment but the mechanism, and the ceremonies run for hours.
