O Figure of Yoruba Religion

Olodumare — the source.

The owner of heaven, too vast for shrines or images: ashe flows from Olodumare, and the orisha carry it into the world.

Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this passage is held

Olodumare is the supreme being, source of all ashe, and receives essentially no direct worship: there are no temples, no images, and no priesthood. The orisha handle the traffic. This structure — a distant high god and active intermediaries — is common across West African religion and was consistently misread by missionaries as either polytheism or a corrupted monotheism, when it is neither: Olodumare's remoteness is the point, not a lapse.
