Eshu — opener of ways.
Messenger, trickster, keeper of the crossroads: every prayer passes through him, and he tests every traveler.
Eshu (Elegba, Legba in the diaspora) is the messenger and the keeper of crossroads, and nothing reaches Olodumare or the other orisha without passing him — which is why he is honored first in every ceremony. He is a trickster, unpredictable, and delights in exposing assumptions, and colonial-era missionaries equating him with the devil did lasting damage to how the tradition is perceived. His color pairing, red and black, marks the doubleness.
