Obatala.

He shapes the bodies of human beings out of clay, and his people wear white, keep themselves cool, avoid argument and do not drink palm wine. He is the senior orisha and the most restrained one, and the story his own priests tell about him is not flattering.

Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this passage is held

Obatala, also Orisanla and in Brazil Oxala, is the senior orisha and the sculptor of human bodies, into which Olodumare then breathes life. His domain is whiteness, coolness, purity and restraint: his devotees wear white, keep themselves and their surroundings clean, avoid conflict, and abstain absolutely from palm wine — the abstention deriving from the story of his drunkenness. His association with people born with physical differences is direct and unusual: those born with albinism, dwarfism, hunchback or other conditions are eni orisa, the orisha's people, are held to be under his particular protection, and to mock or mistreat one is a serious religious offence rather than merely a social one. Albinism carries specific standing in Yoruba tradition as a mark of Obatala, which is worth setting beside the appalling treatment of people with albinism in some other parts of Africa.
