Ogun — iron itself.

God of every blade, rail, and engine: the clearer of paths, sworn upon in courts, honored by drivers and surgeons alike.

Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this passage is held

Ogun holds iron, and therefore everything made of it: the blade, the plow, the rail, the car, the surgeon's scalpel. He is the clearer of paths — the one who cut the way for the other orisha to descend — and is worshipped by hunters, blacksmiths, soldiers, drivers, and mechanics. His oath is taken seriously enough that Nigerian courts have accepted swearing on iron in place of the Bible or Quran, on the grounds that a devotee will not perjure himself on it.
