Believer's baptism.
The act that named the movement — ana-baptism, baptized again — and, at the start, the act men drowned for.
Believer's baptism requires a personal, articulate profession of faith, which means the candidate must be old enough to make one — the age varies, but infancy is excluded by definition. In Anabaptist practice the baptism marks entry into a covenant community with real mutual obligation, including, in the stricter groups, the discipline of shunning, which is one of the tradition's most difficult features from outside and inside alike.
