Core tenet of Lutheranism

Christ is truly present in the sacrament.

In, with, and under the bread and wine — no mere symbol.

Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this passage is held

Lutheran sacramental theology sits between Catholic and Reformed: Christ is truly, bodily present in, with, and under the bread and wine, but Luther declined to explain the mechanism as transubstantiation does. His argument with Zwingli at Marburg in 1529 over exactly this failed to reach agreement and split the Reformation into two streams that have never fully reconciled — Luther is reported to have chalked "this is my body" on the table and refused to move.
