Core tenet of Eastern Orthodoxy

The liturgy is heaven on earth.

The Divine Liturgy does not represent the kingdom; it opens onto it.

Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this passage is held

Orthodox worship is designed to be an entry into heaven rather than a service about it: incense, chant, icons on every surface, priests moving behind the iconostasis, most of it sung, much of it long. The tradition's founding story about this is the Rus' envoys reporting from Hagia Sophia that they did not know whether they were on earth or in heaven — which is legend, and which accurately describes what the liturgy is engineered to produce.
