March 1990, in the shelters.
Members had built and stocked fallout shelters at the Montana ranch on Prophet's reading of a coming nuclear attack. The date passed. The church acknowledged the failure and stopped naming dates.
Prophet's teaching through the 1980s pointed to a coming period of war and upheaval, and the church built and stocked large fallout shelters at the Royal Teton Ranch. In March 1990 several thousand people entered them on the strength of a specific expectation of nuclear attack. Nothing happened. The failure cost the church heavily in members and money, and was followed by the weapons convictions, an environmental fight with the state of Montana over the ranch, and a long retrenchment. The church subsequently stopped setting dates and has acknowledged the episode in its own materials; it remains the thing outsiders know about it.
