Core tenet of Conservative Judaism

Halakha binds — and develops.

The law is real and obligatory, and also historical: change happens from inside it.

Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this passage is held

Conservative Judaism's position is the hardest to hold and the reason it sits between the others: halakha is binding, and it develops — legal change is legitimate when made by qualified scholars using traditional legal reasoning. The movement's Committee on Jewish Law and Standards has issued responsa permitting driving to synagogue, ordaining women, and, in 2006, ordaining gay clergy, each argued as halakhic reasoning rather than as accommodation.
