Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this passage is held
The movement grew out of the nineteenth-century Wissenschaft des Judentums — the scientific study of Judaism — and its founding insistence was that historical scholarship and religious commitment are compatible: you can hold that the text has a history and still hold that it binds. That combination attracted a generation of American Jews and has been squeezed since, as the movement has lost members in both directions.
