Discordian ordination is the most efficient satire of clerical authority ever devised: it grants the highest office to everyone simultaneously and thereby empties it. The Principia prints the card as camera-ready art with the instruction to reproduce and distribute it freely, so the sacrament and its means of production are the same page. The card has been photocopied, screen-printed, tattooed and reset in type for sixty years without any body claiming the right to issue it. There is no ceremony, no witness and no register — you are Pope whether or not anyone hands you the card, and the handing over is a courtesy. What it does in practice is settle arguments: a Discordian confronted with somebody claiming authority can point out that both of them already hold the top job. The rite has been borrowed by several later parody faiths, usually without attribution.
