Kidase before dawn.
The liturgy starts in the dark and the psalmody before it starts earlier still. The congregation stands throughout — there are no pews — and the crowd spills into the churchyard, where people follow by ear. On feast days the drums and the sistra go on for hours before the bread is brought forward.
Eritrean liturgy follows the Ge'ez rite in every particular: the tabot, the fourteen anaphoras, the standing congregation, the drums and the sistra. Vigils begin hours before dawn and the Kidase that follows can run past midday on a great feast. Village churches are often built on hilltops and the sound carries; a substantial part of the parish never enters the building and prays in the yard. Women stand apart from men, and the sanctuary is closed by a curtain that opens only for the communion.
