Rite of The Ethical Culture Movement

The Platform.

Sunday morning, an address, and no prayer. In New York it is at eleven o'clock, which is not a coincidence.

Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this rite is held

The Platform is the answer to what happens at an Ethical Culture meeting, and it is Sunday morning at eleven with the theology removed rather than a philosophy seminar with chairs. There is an address — by the Leader or a guest — on an ethical question, music around it, and discussion and coffee afterwards; there is no invocation, no prayer, no hymn to anything and no benediction. Attending requires nothing and commits you to nothing. The choice of hour and the word "platform" instead of "sermon" are both deliberate: the movement took the social form of a church and refused its content, which is exactly the experiment the Sunday Assembly repeated from scratch a hundred and thirty-seven years later.
