Core tenet of The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church

Tewahedo — made one.

The word is Ge'ez for unified, and it is the church's name for itself. In Christ the divine and the human are one nature, one person, one will, without separation and without confusion. It is the same confession the Coptic and Armenian churches make, and the reason all of them refused Chalcedon.

Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this passage is held

Tewahedo is not a qualifier the church accepts dropping — it is part of the legal name of both the Ethiopian and Eritrean churches. The theology is Cyril of Alexandria's, received through Egypt: one nature out of two, the humanity neither absorbed nor held at arm's length. Ethiopian theologians in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries then argued at length among themselves about how the union works, in the disputes known as Qebat and Tsega, and the crown intervened more than once to settle them. The modern church holds the union in the terms fixed at the Council of Boru Meda in 1878.
