Core tenet of Hasidism
Serve with fervor.
Hitlahavut: prayer should catch fire. Swaying, shouting, weeping — decorum is not a commandment.
Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this passage is held
Hitlahavut — burning enthusiasm — is the quality Hasidism prizes: prayer with movement, song, and volume, sometimes with dancing and drink, against a surrounding culture of decorous devotion. The theological justification is that God desires the heart, and the practical one is that fervor is available to everyone while erudition is not. Early opponents found the noise scandalous, which was rather the point.
