Rite of Hasidism
Niggun — the wordless melody.
A tune with no lyrics, repeated until it opens: the claim that music reaches where words stop.

Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this rite is held
A niggun is a melody without words, hummed or sung repeatedly by a group, often for a long time. The theory is explicit: words limit, and the wordless melody can carry what language cannot. Each Hasidic dynasty has its own niggunim, some attributed to particular rebbes, some reportedly adapted from marches and folk tunes heard in the surrounding culture and "redeemed" by being sung to God.
