Kumbh Mela.

The largest human gathering on earth: bathing at the rivers' meeting to wash lifetimes clean.

⏱ every twelve years — the great confluence◌ Ascetics first, in order of precedence, then everyone else
What happensCamp on the river sand; bathe at the astrologically fixed hour; watch the akharas process in the order they have fought over for centuries
What it needsA month, a tent or nothing at all, and a tolerance for crowds counted in crores
What it aims atA bath at the confluence at the moment the planets line up — the largest gathering of human beings anywhere on earth
Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this rite is held

The Kumbh Mela is the largest gathering of human beings on earth for any purpose — tens of millions across weeks, at a river confluence, on a schedule set by planetary positions. Its organizing story is the churning of the ocean, during which drops of the nectar of immortality fell at four sites, which are the four locations it rotates among. There is no ticket, no membership, and no central authority: the ascetic orders arrive in processions by ancient precedence, bathe, and disperse.
