The Hutterites

Denomination·Founded 1528 CE·est. 58,392 in 544 colonies in North America in 2024, from a Hutterite-published directory analysed by the Young Center for Anabaptist and Pietist Studies and published in the Journal of Plain Anabaptist Communities. Nearly three in four live in Canada: 20,999 in Alberta, 12,655 in Manitoba, 7,955 in South Dakota, 7,873 in Saskatchewan, 5,706 in Montana. The entire population descends from a few hundred survivors who reached South Dakota in the 1870s.

who belongs, how you join, how it is organized
Every Hutterite alive descends from a few hundred people. The line nearly ended twice — reduced to a handful in Transylvania and Wallachia in the 1700s, then rebuilt in Ukraine, then emigrated to Dakota Territory in the 1870s, where fewer than half of about 1,265 arrivals chose communal life.
