Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this rite is held

The first thing done to a Muslim newborn is that the call to prayer is whispered into its right ear and the shorter iqama into its left, so the first words a person hears are the words they will hear five times a day for the rest of their life. On the seventh day comes the aqiqah: the child is named, the head is shaved, and the weight of the hair is given in silver to the poor — two animals for a boy and one for a girl in the most common ruling, which is itself among the routinely questioned asymmetries. A date or something sweet is often rubbed on the palate first, following a reported practice of the Prophet. Naming carries real weight: names built on the servant of plus a divine name, prophets' names, and the names of the Prophet's family dominate, and in some communities a name is chosen by opening the Quran. None of this requires a cleric.
