Core tenet of The Jacobite Syrian Christian Church

The Patriarch of Antioch is the head of the church in India.

The Jacobite Syrian Christian Church is the Indian archdiocese of the Syriac Orthodox Church, in communion with and under the Patriarch of Antioch and All the East, with a Catholicos in India since 2002 acting under him. Everything else — the Qurbana of Saint James, the fifty-day Lent, the Saint Thomas tradition — it holds in common with the church it is at law with.

Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this passage is held

Liturgically and doctrinally this church and the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church are indistinguishable: the same Anaphora of Saint James in Malayalam, the same Shhimo, the same fasts, the same Saint Thomas origin story, the same miaphysite confession. The division is about jurisdiction. Patriarch Ignatius Zakka I Iwas enthroned Baselios Thomas I as Catholicos for India at Puthencruz in 2002, giving the church its own head under Antioch. Baselios Thomas I died on 31 October 2024 and Joseph Mor Gregorios was enthroned as Baselios Joseph I at Atchaneh in Lebanon on 25 March 2025.
