Mor Ignatius Elias III.
The Patriarch of Antioch came to Kerala in 1931 to reconcile the two Malankara factions, worked at it for a year, and died at Manjinikkara in February 1932 without succeeding. He was buried there. The tomb became a pilgrimage site and the annual feast is now one of the largest Christian gatherings in south India.
Elias III was patriarch from 1917, through the collapse of the Ottoman Empire and the Sayfo that gutted his church, and came to India at the age of sixty-four to mediate a dispute that had already split the Malankara community. He spent his last year travelling between parishes and died at Manjinikkara on 13 February 1932. He is venerated as a saint by the Jacobite church and his tomb is its principal shrine. The Malankara Orthodox church does not dispute his sanctity; it disputes what his mission meant.
