Parumala Thirumeni.
Geevarghese Mar Gregorios died at Parumala in 1902, and people were coming to his tomb for healing within months. The Malankara church declared him a saint in 1947 — its own canonisation, of its own bishop, on its own authority, which was the point. The pilgrimage each November draws hundreds of thousands, Christian and not.
Mar Gregorios was born in 1848 at Mulanthuruthy, consecrated bishop at twenty-eight, and spent his life founding schools and a seminary at Parumala on an island in the Pamba. The 1947 declaration was made by the Malankara church itself and was a statement of independence as much as of devotion. His feast, on 2 November, brings Hindus and Muslims to the tomb as well as Christians, which Kerala regards as unremarkable. The Jacobite church venerates him too; the shrine is held by the Orthodox side.
