Kevala — the soul's own light.

Omniscient clarity when the last karma falls away — what Mahavira attained, and what every soul, Jains hold, is capable of.

Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this passage is held

Kevala jnana is omniscience — the soul, cleared of karmic obstruction, knowing all things in all times simultaneously. The Jain account is distinctive: knowledge is the soul's natural condition, and karma is what blocks it, so liberation reveals rather than acquires. A soul that attains it and then sheds the body rises to the top of the universe and remains there in perfect, motionless knowing, which the tradition describes as bliss and which is unlike the union or extinction offered elsewhere.
