Core tenet of Jehovah's Witnesses

God's name is Jehovah, and he is one person.

The divine name restored to the text; Jesus honored as God's first creation, not God himself.

Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this passage is held

Jehovah's Witnesses are non-Trinitarian: they hold Jehovah to be one person, Jesus to be his created Son (identified with the archangel Michael), and the holy spirit to be God's active force rather than a person. They also insist on using the divine name, restoring it throughout their New World Translation. Those positions place them outside what every historic Christian body regards as Christian orthodoxy, and the community accepts that description of the difference.
