Missionary service.
Name tag, companion, and a distant city: the rite of passage that staffs the faith's growth.
Missionary service is the church's most visible institution: roughly two years for young men, eighteen months for young women, self-funded or family-funded, assigned by the church to a location and language the missionary does not choose, with strict rules on contact with home. Around 60,000 serve at any time. Its effect on the church is arguably as much internal as external — it produces a cohort of young adults with intense formative commitment and, often, a second language.
