The soul is light in exile.
Gnosis survives here: the soul (nishimta) belongs to the world of light and is stranded in matter — religion is the long trip home.
Mandaeism is the last surviving Gnostic religion, and its structure is classically Gnostic: the soul is a spark of light from the World of Light, trapped in a material world made by lesser powers, and salvation is the soul's ascent home past the planetary guardians. What makes it unusual among Gnostic systems is that it never became world-denying in practice — the ethics are emphatically pro-marriage, pro-children, and anti-ascetic.
