M Mar Charbel. Youssef Makhlouf entered the monastery at nineteen, took the name Charbel, and spent the last twenty-three years of his life as a hermit at Annaya, keeping silence and eating once a day. He died on Christmas Eve 1898 after a stroke at the altar. Cures reported at his tomb began within months, and the shrine now draws Muslims and Druze as well as Christians.
