Core tenet of Methodism

Grace is for every person.

Arminian to the bone: Christ died for all, and no one is excluded by decree.

Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this passage is held

Methodism's Arminian commitment — that grace is offered to everyone and can be accepted or resisted — put John Wesley in direct and public conflict with the Calvinism of his friend George Whitefield. Prevenient grace is Wesley's technical term: God's grace goes ahead of any human response, enabling a free choice that would otherwise be impossible. It is the theological reason Methodist preaching is invitational in a way Reformed preaching is not.
