The Moravian Church (Unitas Fratrum)

Denomination·Founded 1457 CE·The worldwide Unity is organised into provinces, mission provinces and mission areas rather than a single membership roll, and does not publish one consolidated figure. The Tanzanian provinces together account for roughly 800,000 members and are by a wide margin the largest part of the church; the historic European and North American provinces are small and shrinking.

Bishops who ordain but do not rule. The Moravian episcopate descends from the pre-Reformation Unity and was recognised by the Church of England in 1749, but a Moravian bishop has no diocese and no governing authority: synods govern, and a bishop's work is ordination and pastoral care. The office has been open to women since 1998. Go deeper — context →
