The Rajneesh Movement (Osho)

Branch
Core tenet of The Rajneesh Movement (Osho)

The modern body has to be exhausted before it can be still.

Dynamic Meditation exists because a person carrying a century of suppression cannot simply sit down. An hour of chaos first, then the silence works.

Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this passage is held

Dynamic Meditation was devised in 1970 and is the first thing most people meet in this movement. Rajneesh's argument was medical rather than mystical: the sitting techniques of the Indian traditions were designed for bodies that had not spent twenty years suppressing everything, and a modern Western body handed a cushion will simply sit there arguing with itself. So the hour front-loads chaos — forced breathing, uncensored catharsis, jumping — and puts the silence in the fourth stage, where the body has nothing left to fidget with. Participants do it blindfolded, which removes the last reason to perform. Whether it works is a matter of report; that it was engineered rather than inherited is not in dispute, and he said so.
