Vivre pour autrui — live for others.
Comte coined the word altruism to name it, and built the entire ethic on the claim that the self is a debtor from birth.
Comte coined altruisme, and the modern English word altruism comes directly from this religion. In his system it is not one virtue among others but the whole of morality, opposed to egoisme as the organising conflict of a human life, and the point of the sacraments and the calendar is to train the sympathetic instincts until the altruistic side wins. Vivre pour autrui — to live for others — is the formula. Its critics, then and since, argue that a doctrine which makes the self a debtor from birth and hands the accounting to a priesthood is a recipe for something worse than selfishness, and John Stuart Mill, who admired the early Comte, said the later system was the completest system of spiritual and temporal despotism ever produced by a human brain.
