Rite of Santería / Lucumí
Kariocha — the seating of the orisha.
Seven days of seclusion, the head crowned, a year in white to follow — the making of a priest.
⏱ once — seven days◌ the initiate, the godparents, the community
Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this rite is held
Kariocha — the seating of the orisha on the head — is the week-long initiation that makes a priest: seclusion, the head shaved and painted, the orisha's ashe fixed, followed by a year in white clothing during which the new initiate (iyawo, meaning bride) observes numerous restrictions and is treated as a newborn. It is a full identity transition, and the year in white makes the transformation publicly visible.
