Taoism kept two answers to the question of religious professionals. The Zhengyi (Orthodox Unity) tradition trains priests in hereditary family lineages who marry, live in villages, and perform rites for the community. The Quanzhen (Complete Perfection) tradition ordains celibate monastics who keep temples on the mountains. Both are recognized, and the difference between village ritual specialist and mountain ascetic is not a schism but a division of labor.
