Karbala is the wound that teaches.
Husayn against the empire: better to die standing. Mourned annually at Ashura.
Karbala is not merely commemorated in Shia Islam — it is a lens. The mourning is annual, physical, and emotionally unrestrained, and its content is a permanent template: the righteous few against the corrupt powerful, defeat that is actually victory, and a refusal that costs everything. Shia movements from the Iranian Revolution to Lebanese politics have deployed it explicitly, and the phrase "every day is Ashura, every land is Karbala" is exactly that claim.
