The hukamnama — opening the book at random.
The scripture is opened without looking and the hymn at the top of the left page is read as the order of the day. Gurdwaras post it every morning, families take one before a journey or a wedding, and the Golden Temple's is broadcast worldwide before dawn.
The hukamnama is the mechanism by which a book from 1604 gets to say something about this morning. The scripture is opened at random, the hymn at the top of the left-hand page is read from its beginning, and it is taken as the instruction of the day; the Golden Temple's is broadcast and now pushed to phones before dawn. Families take one before a wedding, a journey, a business decision. The same word, hukamnama, also means a formal edict from the Akal Takht, and the overlap is not accidental — both are the Guru speaking to a situation. Critics inside the Panth point out that a random opening is functionally divination, which the same Rehat Maryada forbids elsewhere; the standard defence is that nothing is being predicted, only applied. It is one of the sharper examples of Sikh practice quietly sitting on top of a Sikh prohibition.
