Core tenet of Sufism

The heart can know God directly.

Beyond law and theology lies taste — experience no book can carry.

Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this passage is held

Sufism's claim is that the Quran's statement that God is closer than the jugular vein is meant literally, and that the heart is the organ of that knowledge. This is not a rejection of law or theology — most great Sufis were jurists — but a claim that the outward (zahir) has an inward (batin) and that the second is reachable. Critics have always objected that this risks bypassing the law; Sufis have generally answered that the path begins with the law and does not leave it.
