The martyr list is not closed.
The church counts 1915 among its founding catastrophes and does not treat martyrdom as a historical category. Its Baghdad cathedral was stormed during Sunday evening Mass in 2010; its people were driven out of Mosul and the Nineveh plain in 2014. The commemorations are annual and the names are recent.
The Sayfo of 1915 killed Syriac Catholics along with Syriac Orthodox, Chaldeans and Assyrians; the church's Anatolian dioceses effectively ceased to exist and the survivors regrouped in Syria, Lebanon and Iraq. The twentieth-century recovery in Iraq was then undone between 2003 and 2014. The 2010 cathedral attack, the 2014 flight from Qaraqosh — a town where the Syriac Catholic Church was the majority — and the destruction of churches in Mosul are all inside living memory for the congregation. The church has raised causes for the 2010 victims and treats the date as a memorial regardless of the canonical outcome.
