Ignatius Michael III Jarweh.
Elected Syriac Orthodox patriarch in 1782, he declared his communion with Rome almost immediately, was repudiated by his own synod, and fled to Lebanon, where he refounded the line at the monastery of Our Lady at Sharfeh. Every Syriac Catholic patriarch since has taken the name Ignatius. The union he made had been attempted intermittently since 1662 and had never held.
Attempts at union between the Syriac Orthodox church and Rome go back to Andrew Akijan, made patriarch with Ottoman and French support in 1662, whose line lapsed. Michael Jarweh was elected in 1782 by the Syriac Orthodox synod and announced his Catholic profession afterwards, which is why the church regards him as the founder of a continuous line rather than a new church. Forced out of Mardin, he settled at Sharfeh, and the see moved to Aleppo, then Mardin again, then Beirut in 1926 after the Anatolian communities were destroyed. All patriarchs take Ignatius as their first name, as do the Syriac Orthodox patriarchs, which regularly confuses outsiders.
