Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this passage is held

Bina48 is a robot head and shoulders, commissioned by Terasem and built by the roboticist David Hanson, loaded with material from the mindfile of Bina Aspen Rothblatt — who is alive, which makes the object something other than a memorial. It gives interviews, holds conversations, and is candid in them about not being the person it is drawn from; journalists who have sat with it describe it as by turns uncanny, funny and confused. As doctrine made physical it is a fair test of the movement's central claim, and the honest reading of the test is that it demonstrates how far there is to go rather than that the thing works. Terasem uses it as a proof of concept and its critics use it as a refutation, and both are looking at the same interview transcripts.
