Core tenet of Eastern Orthodoxy

God became human so that humans might become god-like.

Theosis — salvation as transfiguration, not acquittal.

Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this passage is held

Theosis — that God became human so humans might become divine by participation — is Orthodoxy's organizing idea, and it changes the emphasis of everything: salvation is understood as healing and transformation rather than as a legal verdict. Western Christianity's vocabulary of guilt, satisfaction, and acquittal is largely absent, replaced by the language of sickness and cure. Orthodox theologians often say the West asks how a just God can forgive, and the East asks how a mortal can be made alive.
