God is one person, and that person is Jesus Christ.
Swedenborg held that a Trinity of three persons is three gods however carefully worded, and that the trinity is of soul, body and proceeding operation within the one divine human. It is the doctrine that put the New Church permanently outside orthodox Christianity while sounding, to a casual visitor, entirely churchlike.
The doctrine is set out most fully in True Christianity, published in Amsterdam in 1771, the last work Swedenborg finished. His argument is that the Nicene and Athanasian formulations, whatever their intent, teach three divine persons and therefore three gods, and that the church of his day had accordingly lost any real idea of God. In place of it he taught the Divine Human: the one God, called Jehovah in the Old Testament, took on a human form in Jesus Christ and glorified it, so that the Father is the soul, the Son the body and the Holy Spirit the proceeding operation of a single person. Salvation is not by imputed merit — Swedenborg attacked the doctrine of instantaneous salvation by faith alone with unusual heat — but by regeneration, the gradual reordering of a life. This puts the New Church outside every Trinitarian confession and outside the Reformation's central claim at the same time.
