Mindfulness is the method.
Satipatthana — sustained attention to body and mind — the root of modern vipassana.
Theravada's meditative center is vipassana — insight into impermanence, unsatisfactoriness, and non-self by direct observation rather than by reasoning. The twentieth-century Burmese revival, particularly Mahasi Sayadaw and U Ba Khin, made intensive lay retreat practice available on a scale the tradition had not seen before, and that innovation is the direct ancestor of nearly all secular mindfulness taught in the West today.
