Rishikesh, February 1968.
The Beatles arrived at Maharishi's ashram and left again in acrimony, and the technique became famous in about eight weeks. The movement gained the world and spent thirty years arguing about the price.
Maharishi had been teaching in the West for nine years when the Beatles came to Bangor in August 1967 and then to Rishikesh in February 1968. They wrote much of the White Album there and left within weeks, Lennon in open anger over allegations about Maharishi's conduct that were never substantiated and that Cynthia Lennon later doubted. The association made the technique globally famous and permanently attached it to the 1960s in a way the organisation spent decades trying to escape, moving toward clinical research, education and, from the 1990s, a political party and a programme of large group meditation.
