Ezili Dantò.
The other Ezili: dark, scarred, a working mother with a daughter, a knife, and no capacity for speech — the sound she makes is ke-ke-ke, because her tongue was cut. She is served with fried pork and unsweetened black coffee. Where Freda wants to be adored, Dantò defends, and she is the lwa of women who are managing alone.
Ezili Dantò is the Petwo counterpart and the contrast is deliberate. She is dark-skinned, scarred, a mother — usually with a daughter, Anaïs — and she works. She takes fried pork, unsweetened black coffee, unfiltered cigarettes and rum, and she carries a knife. She cannot speak: the tradition holds that her tongue was cut during the revolution, by her own side, so that if captured she could not name her comrades, and the sound she makes is ke-ke-ke. Her image is Our Lady of Częstochowa, the Polish Black Madonna, whose two facial scars are read as hers. She is the lwa of single mothers, of women raising children alone, of people who endure without recourse, and she is fierce rather than consoling — she is understood to defend her people and to be dangerous when crossed. She is also, in some accounts, a protector of lesbian women.
