Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this passage is held

Erzulie is love in two irreconcilable forms, and Vodou serves both separately. Erzulie Freda is beauty, luxury, flirtation, and inconsolable weeping — she wears three wedding rings and is never satisfied. Erzulie Dantor is the fierce single mother, scarred across the cheek, mute or nearly so, who protects women and children and answers violence. Between them the religion holds a fuller account of love than a single figure could carry.
