Kanzo.

Initiation: seclusion in the djèvo for a week or more, the washing of the head, ordeals initiates do not describe, and emergence in white with a new name and a permanent tie to a house. It costs a great deal. A large majority of Vodouwizan never take it and are not regarded as lesser for it.

Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this rite is held

Kanzo is the initiation and there are grades — ounsi kanzo, then higher levels culminating in asogwe, which confers the rattle and the standing of a priest. The core involves a period of seclusion, often a week or more, in the djèvo, the inner chamber of the temple; the lave tèt, the washing of the head, which fixes the relationship between the initiate and the lwa seated there; a set of ordeals and instructions that initiates decline to describe; and an emergence, dressed in white, with a new ritual name and a permanent membership of the house. It is expensive. It is also entirely optional: a large majority of Vodouwizan never take kanzo, serve their lwa at home their whole lives, and are not regarded as deficient. Initiation confers standing and obligation rather than access — the lwa were already there.
