Why Dantò cannot speak.
She fought at Bwa Kayiman, and her own side cut her tongue out so that if she were captured she could not name anyone. She makes a sound like ke-ke-ke and communicates otherwise. The lwa of mothers, of working women and of people managing alone is a woman who was silenced by the people she was fighting for.
The story of Dantò's silencing is told about the revolution. She is said to have fought at Bwa Kayiman and in the war that followed, and to have had her tongue cut out — in most tellings by her own side, so that if she were captured she could not be made to identify her comrades. This is why she cannot speak and produces only ke-ke-ke, communicating through gesture and through others. Read as theology it is precise: the lwa of mothers, of women who work, and of people who bear things alone is a figure who was silenced by the people she was fighting for and continues to fight anyway. Haitian women who serve her describe the identification directly. The image she is paired with, Our Lady of Częstochowa, carries two slashes on the cheek from a fifteenth-century attack on the icon, and those scars are read as hers.
