Possession is communion, not affliction.
The lwa arrive by riding their servants — the horse lends the body, the community meets the spirit face to face.
Spirit possession in Vodou is the central religious event, and it is welcomed rather than feared: the lwa "mounts" a devotee, who is called the horse, and speaks and acts as the lwa for the duration. The community recognizes which lwa has arrived by the behavior — Legba limps, Ogou drinks rum, Gede is obscene — and receives counsel, healing, and reprimand through them. The person mounted typically does not remember it. Hollywood's "voodoo" is almost entirely unrelated to any of this.
