Cultivate iwa pele — gentle character.

Good character is the whole point of the system: destiny is chosen before birth, but iwa pele is how you live up to the one you picked.

Understanding it — context, not catechism: how this passage is held

Iwa pele — gentle or good character — is the goal of the whole system, and the Ifá verses say plainly that character is what a person's destiny finally depends on. The framework is that each person chooses a destiny (ori) before birth and then forgets it; divination helps locate it, sacrifice adjusts the road, but character is what determines whether it can be realized. It is an ethics of temperament rather than of rules.
